These are cops. Judges. Prison supervisors. These are the people who've been charged with keeping the public safe. They've learned from painful experience you don't achieve safety by imposing harsh prison sentences for minor infractions and waging a War on Drugs that causes more crime than it stops. You do it by building strong communities dedicated to rehabilitation and crime prevention.
SafeKeepers is a video series profiling law enforcement officials who've been on the front lines of the drug war and mass incarceration. They've witnessed the devastating effects of these policies on public safety and are bravely speaking out for change. As filmmakers, we believe it's crucial to elevate their stories. The tales can be heartbreaking and maddening, but they affirm there's another path to safety than the one the United States has taken. We hope viewers will come away from this series understanding it's time to demand a new direction from lawmakers.
SafeKeepers is a joint initiative of Beyond Bars (which is a campaign of Brave New Foundation) and Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).
